GrandFamily Resource Center

Grandparents are raising children in their care in record numbers. SOWN brings grandparent caregivers together in both community based and telephone support groups. SOWN augments these groups with one-on-one counseling, training, problem-solving, and educational programs. SOWN helps grandparent caregivers raising children to continue in their role and keep families together by providing a strong safety net.

"When I first came to SOWN, I was angry all the time, depressed and crying. I have been faithfully attending the Grandparent support group for three months and have come to understand that while I don't want this job, I know I'm not alone and I'm no longer angry. Instead, I'm learning to be a better grandparent."

SOWN was awarded a four-year matching grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to create “The GrandFamily Resource Center”, a network of support services for grandparent-headed households. It offers a “one-stop” approach to provide educational, health-related, and social services to both grandparents and children. This model program is based at Project H.O.M.E.’s Honickman Learning Center Comcast Technology Labs (HLCCTL) in North Philadelphia. The program enhances the ability of grandparents, living in an extremely distressed community, to continue in their role raising their grandchildren by providing a strong safety net of educational, health-related, counseling, information/referral, and supportive services.
