SOWN was a pioneer over 25 years ago recognizing that women are disproportionately affected by the consequences of aging and that physical health is intricately tied to emotional well-being. Over the years, SOWN has found creative and effective ways of enhancing peoples’ ability to function independently, providing services to address these needs.
SOWN annually serves over 1,000 diverse women who are:
- grandparent headed families who are raising over 300 children
- isolated caregivers of relatives with Alzheimer’s Disease
- frail, homebound older women who are suffering from chronic illness, physical decline, and impaired mobility
- older adults living independently
"I am better able to cope with this time in life because of SOWN. I have learned that in sharing my problems, they become less stressful. I come together each week with my grandparent group and we help each other." — Rose
SOWN's programs are:
- family-focused
- outcome driven
- based on prevention
- based on community partnership
